And the Winner Is . . .

I found this site stumbling around in RefDesk. Says every five minutes what the most popular subjects people are probing on the Internet. I'm doing this blog entry about five days before it will ever be seen by anyone, so all of the most popular sites you will see are all going to be different. But just in case you're curious, these were the four most popular topics at 7:45 p.m. on Monday, May 23.
  1. Jennifer Anniston's new haircut (what??)
  2. Arnold Schwartzenegger
  3. Selena Gomez (who?)
  4. Joplin tornado (the first thing on the list that actually matters)
By the way, "the rapture" was #8.

you mean you don't lie awake nights worrying about jennifer anniston's hair? oh yeah, i heard about that tornado---but come on, compared to jennifer's haircut??

but i must say, i did enjoy the rapture. depressing if you think about how many people believed it, but at least something in the news you could guiltlessly enjoy laughing at.

I don't lie awake nights about much of anything actually. Least of all anying abou anybody in show business. The rapture people . . . don't you think that's just sad?

sure, the rapture people are sad. the need to embrace absolute certainty in the whole cosmic business of uncertainty is very human, and the terror built into all our souls very real. but they're also willing dupes, who choose not to know that there have been thousands of end-of-the-world dates over the centuries, and that their bible is careful enough not to give a date for the rapture, which presumably god will pick when he's good and ready. so they're sad but also funny. and maybe at core a bit scary, since religious fanaticism tends to incorporate more dangerous beliefs too....

Fanatics are =always= scary. True believers are the most dangerous people around because they cannot admit the possibility of error.
